The accessories are also more than usually cheap - the seaming is visible on the necklaces and bracelets, and the "silver" items have "I'm going to chip" written all over them. However, the legs are the "clicky" poseable type (the arms are not).
The dresses do work as advertised. They tint when they get wet. There are three ways included to do this. The one that works the best is the "paintbrush," which has a clever push button that lets water onto the bristles. I thought the button would be too hard for my 4-year-old, but she handled it fine.
The stencil and spritz bottle also work well, but this was trickier for my daughter to use, so she ignored it. The small stamps had two problems - they could be easily ripped off the wands (two of them didn't make it through the first day, though they glued back on) and without exactly the right amount of water, the shape became a blob.
None of this mattered to my 4-year-old though, and coloring the dresses kept her occupied a long time. The colors on the dresses stay visible for about an hour before they dry to nearly-white on their own. If you have a child who wants to start over, 2 minutes with a hairdryer does the trick.
Overall, if you're looking for a Barbie, this is a middle-of-the-pack choice. It's uglier than most, and between the tattoos, extremely short dress, ridiculously large earrings, and OMG platform heels, it's a little more cringe-worthy for someone who's on the fence about Barbie in general. But the water gimmick is a neat option that works as advertised and makes a very minimal mess, and the inclusion of a second outfit is nice at this price level.
